ISLAMIC, Umayyad Caliphate. temp. 'Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan, AH 65-86 / AD 685-705. Drachm (Silver, 31 mm, 3.78 g, 10 h), Arab-Sasanian type, citing governor ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Muhammad (AH 80-84 / AD 700-703), SK (Sijistan), AH 84 = AD 703. Draped Sasanian-style bust to right, wearing an elaborate mural crown; behind head, ‘GDE ʾp̄zwt’ (‘[may his] glory increase’ in Pahlavi); before head, ‘ʾp̄dlhmʾn / Y mhmtʾn’ (‘ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Muhammad’ in Pahlavi); in outer margin, ‘bism Allāh - rabbī’ (‘In the name of Allah, my Lord’ in Arabic). Rev. Fire altar, flanked by two attendants; to left, date in Pahlavi; to right, SK (abbreviation for the name of the mint in Pahlavi). Album 38A. Rare. Light doubling and somewhat rough along the edge, otherwise, about extremely fine.
